We are pleased to announce that registration for the World Pilot Gig Championships (WPGC) will be administered by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) this year. This collaboration will help the event to meet more stringent safety and data protection requirements and, in addition, help to recruit and coordinate volunteers - essential for what is, by far, the biggest event in the gig rowing calendar.
Registration is now open. Registration is now open. Club secretaries have been contacted directly by the CPGA to register their Gigs. Race registrations are now open via cpga.justgo.com. If you have any questions please contact membership@cpga.co.uk.
Why are these changes being made?
Clubs and organisations undertaking the running of large scale gig rowing events face a number of logistical challenges. The CPGA has made a commitment to support their partners with assistance and resources where possible: for instance, provision of race officials, marshalls and other volunteers. In providing support with the registration process, the CPGA aims to secure data management across the sport and help clubs and event hosts address a challenging issue.
The WPGC is a unique and complex event which has grown immensely over the years, placing increasing demands on a limited pool of island volunteers. All the partners involved in the event are committed to ensuring its continuance and maintaining its special qualities. By working together we hope to address some pressing issues that have arisen due to organisational changes on the islands.
What will the partnership look like?
The World Pilot Gig Championship Committee consists of a dedicated but small group of volunteers. Collaboration with the CPGA, the Islands Partnership (IP) and other agencies will help to make the event sustainable. Both the CPGA and IP have committed to investing significant resources to support the delivery of the event. The wider group includes the Council of the Isles of Scilly, the Duchy of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.

What is GigRower membership?
GigRower membership is an annual £25 membership. Since its launch in June, over 1500 members of our rowing community have joined. Proceeds from the GigRower membership support our sport, including vital safety and welfare provision, the delivery of new and existing events, the development of junior rowing and GigRower StreamTeam coverage.
GigRower member benefits include:
What will the new system do?
The new system will enable club officers to maintain up to date registration information. It will also securely manage information about participants including:
What will be expected of the volunteers put forward by clubs?
Clubs will be asked to put forward one volunteer name per day - three in total. It is essential that the volunteer put forward is not competing on the day specified. Volunteers will be scheduled to undertake responsibilities such as marshalling. Volunteers will be expected to attend a remote briefing session prior to the event to prepare them for their role. They will be expected to attend an in person briefing session first thing in the morning on the day of their voluntary contribution. All clubs participating in this way will result in a significant pool of volunteers which will lead to more volunteers getting involved for shorter periods of time.
What will happen next?
Clubs will be sent a Gig Shipping Form to be completed and returned to the CPGA by 1st December. Registrations will open by mid November and will close by 16th January. Notice of these dates will be communicated by email to all club officials and posted on our websites.
Can I be a member of more than one CPGA club?
Yes, once an individual has signed into cpga.justgo.com they can be added to a single or multiple club member registers. Whilst individuals must nominate a primary club, there is no limit to the number of clubs that individuals can join. Individuals can sign in to cpga.justgo.com and visit ‘My Profile’ in the ‘Member Area’ to view, add and manage clubs, in the ‘My Club’ area to the right of the page. This area is where individuals can nominate and change their primary club. Club administrators can add individuals to their member register.
Can I compete for more than one club at WPGC2023?
As in previous years, rowers and coxes may compete for multiple clubs at WPGC2023. However, to facilitate the new registration system, rowers and coxes must be listed on the membership register of each club that they represent. Please note Rule 10: rowers must be a primary member of a club to be eligible for the top 24 positions.
What will happen if a club struggles to provide volunteers?
The idea behind clubs supplying 1 volunteer for each of the 3 days of WPGC2023 is to enable clubs to draw on members that are not competing on every day of the event. For instance, an open rower might be available to volunteer on the Friday, a veteran rower might be able to volunteer on the Saturday and a super veteran might be able to volunteer on the Sunday. Clubs are also free to put forward club members that are not competing at all. Any enquiries relating to club volunteers should be addressed to membership@cpga.co.uk.
I am not a club member, can I volunteer?
If you are not a member of a club but are interesting in volunteering at the event please contact membership@cpga.co.uk.
What should our club do if it cannot attend this year?
If an invitation is not required, it must be returned to the WPGC for re-allocation - not passed on to another club. Non-attendance will not affect invitations for the following year.
Can the same gig be registered in more than one of the races?
The same gig can race in the mens & ladies opens. However, the same gig will not be able to race in both the mens vets and mens supervets or both the ladies vets and ladies supervets as the race timings are too tight to allow this.

- Club representatives will complete a form providing details of the gigs entered for shipping - to be submitted to the CPGA by 1st December.

- All participating adult crew members (over the age of 18) will become GigRower members to secure their eligibility to compete.
- For the first time clubs will be asked on registration to nominate 3 volunteers willing to fulfil voluntary duties during the event.
