Latest UPDATE
Updated by WPGC on 11th April 2024
This years World Pilot Gig Championships welcomes a brand-new event space, equipped with a bar run by Old Town Inn for spectators to come and watch the live gig racing from along the main strip of Hugh Town! In between the live racing, there will also be a chance to view heritage clips from WPGC’s gone by. We wonder how many faces you will recognise…
Special thanks must go to our lead sponsor, Isles of Scilly Travel for sponsoring the 3m x 2m LED screen, SC Dogs for providing the starlink internet connection, Cornish Pilot Gig Association - CPGA for collating and providing all the heritage clips and Visit Isles of Scilly for pulling the area together operationally.
We look forward to seeing all enjoying this area over the weekend
This year we have 441 registered crews split over the following race categories
Womens Open - 132
Mens Open - 129
Womens Vets - 43
Mens Vets - 39
Womens Supervets - 49
Mens Supervets - 40
Womens Masters - 4
Mens Masters - 5
We are expecting nine new gigs at this year’s World Pilot Gig Championships but here on Scilly we are most excited about the new arrival for our very own St Agnes Gig Club! The Cetewayo, built by Patrick Bird at Kernow Boats, is due to be launched on Wednesday 17 April before the first ladies champs warm up race.
We are pleased to share an article Patrick has written on the history of the original pilot gig Cetewayo and the building of the new racing gig.
